Tell us a little bit about yourself and your journey.

I am a North Carolina native, but have lived in Carrboro for most of my life, and am very connected to the community here. I am also Greek-American, and have been lucky to spend many of my summers in Greece. My research interests as well as general passions have been deeply informed by my Greek heritage. I received my bachelors degree in Global Studies with a concentration in Human Rights from UNC Greensboro in 2021 where I focused on climate change in conflict zones and far-right/nationalist movements.

What are you passionate about (as related to your major/area of study)?

I currently study solidarity-based and non-hierarchical social movements and how they respond to periods of crisis. I am inspired by their ability to offer life-affirming strategies of adapting to social and economic crises, often outside of the traditional mechanisms provided by state systems. My focus is on such movements in Greece, and the ways in which they have adapted to and transformed the dire social conditions brought on by the Greek debt disaster and the so-called refugee crisis.

What are your plans/goals for the future?

I am currently applying to PhD programs where I hope to continue my study of these types of social movements, as well as hone my skills as a teacher and researcher. I’m not sure yet where this will take me, but I see both international travel, research, and teaching in my future.

Dream project?

I would love to engage with social movements through participatory research in a way that is mutually beneficial to their cause, and my own as an activist academic.

Somewhere you’ve always wanted to visit?

Lebanon, Columbia, Egypt and India!

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your journey.

In the years between leaving Australia and arriving in North Carolina, I’ve been lucky to live and work in many different countries, from freelance writing while backpacking around Southeast Asia, working in civil society consulting for clients in Europe and Africa in the areas of gender equality and sexual and reproductive health and rights, to finding my calling as a gender-based violence specialist in the United Nations system.

What are you passionate about (as related to your major/area of study)?

I’m a Rotary Peace Fellow in the Graduate Curriculum of Global Studies, specializing in gender-based violence, migration, and the Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus. My research proposes a conceptual model for operationalizing the Nexus that centers the elimination of endemic violence as essential to the commitment to “leave no one behind, and reach the furthest behind, first.”

What are your plans/goals for the future?

I hope to return to the United Nations system and put into practice everything I’ve learned at Carolina.

Dream project?

Supporting global policies, strategies, and programming related to Protection and violence prevention, risk mitigation, and response that is accountable to affected populations.

Somewhere you’ve always wanted to visit?

My short-list at the moment includes Peru, Colombia, Afghanistan, Japan, and Turkey, but my long-list is very, very long!
