Celebrating Amy Beach and Florence Price
Description
As part of our project featuring music by women composers, violinist Sunmi Chang and I originally planned for an in-person concert at UNC. Due to the pandemic, we have started our journey with remote collaborations. The first American woman to write a symphony, Amy Beach’s Romance and Sonata for Violin and Piano were written in the rich 19th-century Romantic harmonic language. Florence Price was a brilliant composer who lived in the Jim Crow era. She endured a battle with systemic racism and sexism throughout her life. Her Fantasy No. 1 is a synthesis of the post-Romantic style and the melodic and harmonic idioms of the African American folksong.
