8th Annual ASGO Symposium: “Matters of Art: Materiality, Functionality & the Agency of Art Objects”
Description
UNC’s Art Student Graduate Organization is excited to welcome you to our 8th Annual Symposium, “Matters of Art: Materiality, Functionality & the Agency of Art Objects.” This year’s symposium is hosted by the Ackland Museum of Art and will explore materiality with an emphasis on raw materials, cross-cultural exchange, sensory interactions, and the translation of raw materials into artistic products. Our keynote speaker, Dr. Mónica Domínguez Torres from the University of Delaware, will be presenting a chapter entitled “Precious Critters: Pearls, Natural History, and Artistic Practice in the Early Modern Spanish World” from her upcoming book Pearls for the Crown: European Courtly Art and the Atlantic Pearl Trade, 1498-1728 on Friday evening. We are also happy to invite 8 speakers from both UNC and other universities across the country who will be presenting their research on Saturday in two panels: “Transference: Material Products of Global Exchange” and “Materials in Decline: Displacing, Degrading, Decaying.” We hope to see you there!
